‘’You have patiently suffered for me without quitting. Yet there is one thing wrong; you don’t love me as at first! Think about those times of your first love (how different now!) and turn back to me again and work as you did before; or else I will come and remove your candlestick from its place among the churches.’’ (Rev 2:3-5, TLB)

‘’I know your persistence, your courage in my cause, that you never wear out. But you walked away from your first love – why? What’s going on with you, anyway? Do you have any idea how far you’ve fallen? A Lucifer fall! Turn back! Recover your dear early love. No time to waste, for I’m well on my way to removing your light from the golden circle.’’                   (MSG)

Turn back to me and do the works you did at first. If you don’t repent, I will come and remove your lampstand from its place among the churches.”   (NLT)

I tried to capture this Scripture in three different translations (TLB, MSG & NLT) in order to help us understand better what God is saying to us. He is calling on us to take a long hard look at our lives and return to where we first met. It’s just like falling in love with someone – you know the feeling of butterflies in your tummy; buzzing sound in your ears; bright colorful stars in your eyes; your heart doing front, back and side flips (that is sense leaving your body). This mostly happens at the beginning phase of a love relationship but with time, you become more coordinated, calm and collected (as in sense begins to return gradually). Remember though, how at that initial stage, you could do almost anything for the one you love no matter the cost, nor how discomforting, it didn’t matter, as long as the person was pleased? This is where God is calling us back to – for some, they have become so complacent, that the things of God don’t excite them anymore (they are like ice fish in a cold room). Kingdom matters is now optional and no more priority; the insults of those who insult the Lord or scoff at the things of God no longer fall on them (Psm 69:9). The once senseless arguments of the people of the world are now beginning to make ‘sense’ to them. Some who couldn’t take a step without consulting God now do so without so much as a thought in His direction. They no longer depend on His never-failing strength to see them through the day nor partner with the Holy Ghost in doing things. All these and more…

God is calling us back to that time when He first wooed us and we fell hard and hopelessly in love with Him; He is asking us to return and love Him as we first did. If not, even though it might seem to others like we are still on course, He who sees our hearts and truest intentions will remove our ‘light from the golden circle.’  I don’t know about you, but if there’s a golden circle kept by God and maintained by the Holy Spirit, I definitely want my light to be there.

May God help us find our way back to Him.

P.S – I remember how excited I was when I first became interested in the advances/proposal of God. No matter how much of Him I got, it never seemed enough, I always was hungry for more. Always.

PRAYER – Oh Lord, revive our hearts and rekindle our love for You. Amen!

If at the end of the day all you have is God, then you have more than enough.
